Hi Jen,

What's your definition of "fiber/textile"? That could describe anything that could be used to form a basket. Are you referring directly to fabrics only? Would you include yarns? String? I make baskets using garden hose and cable ties. Almost anything that's flexible and allot longer than it is wide can be used to make baskets.

There are basically only three types of basket construction, coiling, twining and plaiting. If you want to work with fabric, probably coiling is the best place to start but any of the three could probably be used under the right circumstsnces. Any good book that covers all three types of construction will give you enough technique to start experimenting if you can't find specific instruction on the materials you have in mind.

Take a look at the Basketmakers web site. It will keep you busy all afternoon the first time you visit. You can also find a list of guilds in your area there and right here on the NBO site.

If you're in Los Angeles, come visit my studio and we'll figure it out together!

Brian
