That is definitely an incredible basket with an unbelievable amount of detail. I have never seen anything quite like it. It seems to combine a number of different styles. My gut feeling is that it is probably Asian in origin, but it could be American Indian. It at least appears to be heavily influenced by American Indian motifs. While it is constructed in a traditional Appalachian design the weaving material doesn't look correct. I always tend to think of Appalachian baskets as being woven of white oak which this basket doesn't appear to be. Besides the weaving material, the fancy braiding around the rim and handle edges along with the feet on the bottom are what make me think "Asian".
Anyway, it is still a very nice basket and definitely unique to anything I have ever seen. I guess let us know if you ever find out anything more definitive.
