You’re invited to take part in the Great Basin Basketmakers’ convention, an exciting three-day event in Reno, Nevada, July 15-18. Registration deadline is March 30 for “Great Basin Basketmakers Weave-In: A Fresh Approach”, offering creative workshops, special events, exhibits, and basket tours that will take your breath away.

Beginners, experts, and wildly innovative basket artists will converge downtown Friday and Saturday to study with 18 well-known teachers from around the west. On Sunday, which is Great Basin Day, participants will discover the materials, techniques, and lore of the Great Basin. Other convention activities include demos, gallery exhibits, mini projects, talks, vendor sales, slide shows, instructor’s marketplace, and optional basket bus tours to the Pyramid Lake reservation and Lake Tahoe. An additional bonus: “Weaving Naturally in the Great Basin”, a book about weaving with Great Basin plant materials, will be available to the public for the first time.

Evenings are full, too, with an opening mixer at the dramatic new Nevada Museum of Art, featuring an exhibition and slide presentation of innovative contemporary basketry. Saturday evening you’ll be treated to a fabulous western heritage evening at the Bull Ranch, one of the oldest working ranches in the west.

Backdrop for the convention, taking place in the downtown Pioneer Center and Sierra Arts Center, is Artown™, Reno’s award-winning month-long celebration of the arts. Most Artown™activities are free and just a few steps from convention headquarters.
